Malibu was founded 1982 The product was created by Tom Jago of International Distillers & Vintners, and originally made from fruit spirits, flavoured with rum and coconut flavouring in Curaçao. Originally, Malibu was used to simplify the making of piña coladas by bartenders. When Malibu took off, the production was then moved to Barbados, where the rum is made by West Indies Rum Distillery Ltd,  and the quality of the ingredients used was improved.
 
Malibu Coconut Rum, like other flavored rums, is very sweet and this fact could turn some people off. The sweet taste makes MalibuCoconut Rum an easy- drinking liquor and it is one of a handful of flavours rums that I like to drink neat or on the rocks. The tasty coconut makes a delicious treat.
